In addition to working for Journey Dog Training, Amy also teaches group classes and provides in-person behavior consultations for Pawsitive Dog Training in Fairbanks, Alaska. Her favorite part about science-based dog training is that anyone can learn to do it! She also loves learning the latest force-free training methods from zoologists and behaviorists, and she dreams of someday working with a sea lion. Through a combination of Grisha Stewart’s Behavior Adjustment Training, Leslie McDevitt’s Control Unleashed, and endless support from her dog-training mentor, Amy’s first reactive pup was able to learn the emotional self-regulation skills to successfully live with another dog.Īmy enjoys facilitating communication between dogs and humans to fulfill the needs of both ends of the leash. However, it wasn’t until she adopted a reactive shelter dog in 2013 that she started her force-free training journey. Originally from Missoula, Montana, Amy trained her first dog in high school through her local 4-H club. She is also a graduate of the Fear Free Shelter Program and a member of the Pet Professional Guild. Kayla shares her life with two border collies (Barley and Niffler) and a stray cat that recently adopted himself into the family. When not working on Journey Dog Training, Kayla also works with conservation detection dogs through her nonprofit K9 Conservationists. Kayla has a degree in biology from Colorado College. She has also authored several peer-reviewed articles for the IAABC Journal. Kayla’s expertise as a Certified Dog Behavior Consultant has been featured in many media outlets including NPR, the Chicago Tribune, and Pet MD. Kayla started Journey Dog Training when she was in college as an in-person dog trainer, building the site into an online dog behavior resource center with the goal of promoting excellent training advice to owners around the world for free.Īs a young trainer, Kayla gained experience at All Breed Rescue and Training, Canis Major Training, Denver Dumb Friends League, Humane Society of Boulder Valley, and Humane Society of Western Montana.
